Product description

ThatModell 9482 Transient Designer 4vonSPLis a four-channel dynamics processing device that offers a different approach to level-independent shaping of a sound's dynamic response. With the Transient Designer it is possible to control the attack and sustain behavior of a signal in a simplified way. Unlike other dynamic devices, the processing is not determined by the signal level but by its dynamic envelope, so all signals (loud and soft) are processed equally.

With just one pair of controls per channel, you can emphasize or smooth out the attack and lengthen or shorten the sustain of a sound event. It is possible to shape the dynamics of a signal at will, like changing the distance and position of the microphone after recording, for example.

With little effort you can shorten or lengthen the attack of all types of percussive signals such as kick drums, snare drums, toms, congas etc. to give them more kick or to flatten the signals. It's almost like being able to change the amount of drum damping after recording. The same goes for many other signals: amplify or reduce the picking sound of an acoustic guitar, sustain string sound longer, reduce reverberation time of a choir, compress solo vocals, increase intelligibility, apply piano pedal "electronically", turn down a notch or give the slap bass more attack etc.

The Transient Designer offers a different approach to dynamic processing, eliminating the need for controls such as threshold, ratio and gain and offering very sophisticated automation. So while the processing inside the box can be quite complex, the user only has to deal with two intuitive controls per channel.

Differential Envelope Technology
SPL's Differential Envelope Technology is an analog SPL level-independent envelope shaping solution that allows transients to be accelerated or decelerated and held, lengthened or shortened. The level of dynamic processing required could not even be duplicated with a chain of multiple conventional compressors, yet only two controls per channel are required to allow the user to completely reshape the attack and sustain characteristics of a sound. Attack can be boosted or cut by up to 15dB, while Sustain can be boosted or cut by up to 24dB, making weak drum sounds much more percussive and powerful, or toning down over-percussive transients. All necessary time constants (attack, decay and release) are automatically and adaptively optimized in a musical way according to the characteristics of the input signal. This results in natural-sounding signal processing and fast operation.

The transient designer circuitry uses envelope followers to mimic the behavior of the natural signal, guaranteeing optimal results regardless of the dynamics of the input signal. No manual threshold adjustments are required due to Differential Envelope Technology (DET) level-independent processing.

For stereo operation, the link function connects channel pairs (1 and 2 or 3 and 4). Linked channels are driven by the same sidechain voltage to maintain a coherent and stable stereo image. When operating in Link mode, the controls on the first (or third) channel, including the Active switch, also control the second (or fourth) channel.

Each channel is fitted with relay hard bypass circuitry to ensure minimal signal path when the process is bypassed and to provide power failure resiliency. The signal LEDs allow the user to quickly monitor signal flow, which is especially important when the four channels are connected to a patchbay. The Transient Designer 4 is equipped with XLR connectors for balanced operation.

  • The attack of a kick drum or loop can be emphasized with a single control to increase punch and penetration in the mix
  • The sustain of a snare or room sound can be shortened very musically to clean up the mix for more transparency
  • Acoustic or electronic instruments become "in the face" sounds or can be smoothed out with lower attacks
  • Deverb ability. Less sustain shortens the reverb flags of each sound
  • Panorama effects are based on different dynamic effects per channel - try this with loops for example

How spl transient Designer works? ›

    Transient Designing

The Transient Designer revolutionizes dynamics processing by allowing level-independent (no threshold!) editing of envelopes for the first time. Accelerate or slow down transients, lengthen or shorten decay times with just two controls (attack and sustain).

Does Ableton have a transient shaper? ›

Transient Machines is a Max for Live Pack that allows for deep sound-shaping possibilities. Modelled after the transient designers found in professional recording studios, Transient Machines is a versatile tool for reshaping the dynamics of drums, loops, and much more.

What does transient master do? ›

TRANSIENT MASTER is indispensible for mixing drums, guitars, pianos, plucked strings — anything with intrinsic attack. It gives you another axis to work on. As well as panning left and right, you can position things quite precisely at the front or back of a mix without juggling volume levels.

    Is a transient designer a compressor? ›

Technically, a transient shaper is a dynamics processor like a compressor, except that it's not affected by incoming signal level. In more practical terms, it allows you to independently accentuate or reduce the attack and sustain portions of a sound, which can be really handy.

    Why is SPL important? ›

In audio, SPL plays an essential role because it is the correct way of measuring the perception of loudness. In other words, SPL measures the strength of a sound wave when emitted from a speaker. It is also used to measure the sensitivity of a microphone to the sound waves' strength.

How many times can you use an Ableton license? ›

You get two authorizations for two computers when you register your product. To view instructions on how to install Live onto a new computer, follow these steps.

What are the cons of Ableton Live Lite? ›

Ableton Live Lite limits you to 16 audio and MIDI tracks, and that's any combination meaning that you can only have 16 tracks total. It also limits you to four mono inputs and four mono outputs, so if you are thinking of tracking a whole band with Ableton Live Lite, it is not going to happen.

What is the purpose of a transient designer? ›

A transient designer is a dynamic processor that provides a wide scope of control over the Attack and the Sustain of a sound. Due to the nature of what a transient designer does, it has also been dubbed as a Transient Shaper because of its innate ability to carve a sound into a mix by physically shaping it.

When would you use a transient Designer? ›

If you're dealing with guitars that sound a bit too jangly, you can add a transient designer to reduce the pluckiness of the sound. This will smooth out the guitars and make them sit back in the mix.

What is a transient tool? ›

A transient shaper is an essential mixing tool. These dynamics processing plugins control the transient response and envelope curve of an audio signal. Use them to shape dynamics, remove reverb and mic bleed, add punch, extend the impact of any sound, and more.

What are the 4 different types of audio compressors? ›

FET, VCA, Optical, and Variable-Mu are four classifications of audio compressors. Each has different characteristics due to how its gain reduction circuits react to the signal being passed through them.

    Do I need a transient shaper? ›

As a rule of thumb, use a transient shaper when you're trying to shape the character of a dynamic signal's transients during their attack and release phases.

What is a good SPL level? ›

Because a standard rock concert has an approximate SPL of 100-130 db, if you are mixing for any event, you should keep a SPL meter handy and try to keep the SPL at or below 80 db. If you are attending a rock concert, you should make sure to have hearing protection with you.

How do you calculate SPL? ›

The sound pressure level (SPL) is defined asSPL=20 log10(PP0)dB(re. 2×10−6Pa)Likewise, sound intensity level (SIL) and sound power level (PWL) are normally expressed in decibels.
